God’s sovereignty has been on my mind for well over a week
now. I still believe the biggest problem humans, Christian and non-Christians
have with God is ultimately his sovereignty. I even bought a book that I am
about half way through trying to better understand this concept. After a week
of study and prayer the best way I can explain the sovereignty of God is just because.
Some times when children ask question after question repeatedly the only answer
you can give at that time is “just because” I prayed the other day that I
wanted to become an expert on the subject of the sovereignty of God and right
now this is what He has given me. I am not done yet with my study but I am beginning
to think that when it’s all said and done just because is still going to be the
simplest and truest answer and we shouldn’t try to make it more complicated than
that. Romans 9:20-24 is just one of countless images of the sovereignty of God.
20 No, don’t say that. Who
are you, a mere human being, to argue with God? Should the thing that was
created say to the one who created it, “Why have you made me like this?”
21 When a potter makes jars
out of clay, doesn’t he have a right to use the same lump of clay to make one
jar for decoration and another to throw garbage into? 22 In the same way, even though God
has the right to show his anger and his power, he is very patient with those on
whom his anger falls, who are destined for destruction. 23 He does this to make the riches
of his glory shine even brighter on those to whom he shows mercy, who were
prepared in advance for glory. 24 And we are among those whom he selected, both from the
Jews and from the Gentiles.
