How's your hearing?

It’s funny sometimes when you read the Bible how certain words will jump out at you, simple words that should not really affect the entire meaning of a passage but they do and today was one of those times for me. It was in Luke 8:18 that says:

18 “So pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away from them.”

It was that fifth word for me today the word (how). I even checked a couple of different translations and they both said how. If a person  were to read through this quickly they may read what you hear, but it definitely says how you hear. This evidently must mean something and be important. Do you remember the Sunday School song that little kids sing  or perhaps even yourself have sung where it says "be careful little hears what you hear?" That makes sense to me, not to be listening to the wrong things. But what about being careful how you hear? What does that mean? I think it means the attitude that you listen to God’s word with. Are you really listening with an awe and reverence? Are you listening with the intent that God’s word will transform you to be more like Christ? Are you listening, craving to know more about Christ? Or are you listening because you have to? Because you have been told it’s the right thing to do, or because someone else wants you to? If you don’t listen for the right reasons this says you are not listening at all and even what you think you have heard or what you think you know will in the end all be taken away. So ask yourself, how's your hearing?
