When Jesus tells a person to do something it’s probably a good idea to do it, no matter if you are the fish or the fisherman. Just like in Luke 5 with the whole fisher’s of men thing. When you study the first part if this chapter you will find that not only did these fishermen have no luck that night but what Jesus told them to do was against everything that they knew.
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”
First of all commercial fishermen back then fished at night and along the banks and Jesus told them to go out in the day and fish in the deep. To do this required trust in Jesus and when they did so the amount of fish they caught almost sunk the boat. It’s no different for us when we feel that Jesus is telling us to do something we should do it even if it is something that goes against everything we know. There are some other things to note in verses 8-11.
8 When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m too much of a sinner to be around you.” 9 For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him. 10 His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed. Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!” 11 And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus.
There are some definite things to take from all this whether you are the fish or fisherman and they are:
Realize what Jesus can do.
Fall to your knees before Jesus
Repent
Be awestruck by what Jesus does
Leave everything else behind and follow Him.
