What Do Sympathy Cards and Easter Eggs Have In Common?
You might be asking what in the world made me ask this question. It was two things that I saw at Wal*Mart yesterday which of course were Easter eggs and sympathy cards. These two things made me think about two of the times a lot of people tend to put on the Christian costume, Easter and the death of a loved one. Easter first, how many people will go to church on Easter Sunday that have that have not been there since Christmas? Or how many will have a family gathering and have no idea of the significance of the occasion? It's sad really.
Then there is to me the more troubling aspect of the sympathy card. As I was looking through the cards last night it really hit me how these cards that are intended to help in a time of need, could really give false hope to a person who does not yet know Christ. "They are in a better place now" or they went to be with the Lord, really? Do you know that for sure? There is a chance they may not be.
I would never make it as a sympathy card writer mine would say something like It's too late for them what about you? or Have you thought about where you will go when you die? I know this sounds cruel but these are very important questions. Questions that are not thought about by allot of people when a loved one dies or at Easter.
So what do Sympathy cards and Easter eggs have in common? Two things really and both contain the word hope it all depends on your relationship with Christ.
1. a false hope
2. a real hope
Which hope to you have? Which hope do you need?
In reality the following verse is what started all of this today
If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
(1 John 1:6 ESV)
I would just like to leave you with some other things to think about because of this verse.
Are you lying? Do you say you believe in God but don't really know who he is? Do you say you believe in Christ yet you don't trust in him? Or are you practicing the truth? Again all very important questions.
